Texture Synthesis from Photographs - Textursynthese aus Photographien

Master-Thesis

The objective of this work is to transfer the appearance of the surface of an object onto another. Contrary to existing approaches, the source data will be a photograph. The main interest is to capture complex surface appearances without relying on an expansive scanning device.
The main challenge is to perform texture synthesis directly from the photograph content, instead of using a flat square patch as input. Our goal is to use as little information as possible about the surface geometry. In particular we do not seek to reconstruct or capture the full geometry of the scene.
We will first focus on the synthesis algorithm and assume that any required information about the surface is given as an input. We will then seek to extract this information from the photograph, targeting challenging cases such as the curved surface of a tree or arch.
