Photo-Realistic Ray Tracing of CAD Data

(01.10.2003)

The goal of this project is the development of new methods for photo-realistic rendering of complex CAD data sets. All aspects, ranging from data preparation to final image synthesis, will be researched. Rendering with ray tracing based algorithms is the main focus. The primary goal is not interactivity, but perfect photo-realism with minimal effort for the user. Stable and fast methods for the following tasks have to be developed: sampling, material and lighting simulation, construction and traversal of accelleration structures for ray tracing. The implementation will be mostly CPU based, targeting modern multi-core architectures and PC clusters. GPU-based methods will also be analysed.
